Student Internship Testimonials St. Olaf

This fall, I had the opportunity to intern at Fame Digest. I worked as the Art Director, and assisted staff by creating and designing the layout for this new fashion and entertainment magazine, attended local fashion events, interviewed designers and wrote articles for the publication. I played a very active role with the editor in chief and helped solve specific art and design issues. It was a great complement to my education, and great experience to take with me after graduation to a future position in the Advertising, Marketing, and Publishing Industries. -Christina Saari ‘06

All internships are 3 months and you may contact us with the contact us form.

 MY INTERNSHIP WITH FAME DIGEST

Written by: Lauren Michelle Conangla

When I graduated from Augustana College last May 2005, I was faced with an interesting decision, as many graduates are: What now?? With a double major under my belt (Marketing and Spanish) and no concrete plans for the future, I worked a part time job and decided to up and leave for Europe for a few months of freedom, fun, and self-discovery. I’ve known for years that what I wanted to do with my career would in some way or another involve fashion…living in Europe only helped to solidify that thought. The small town where I lived for two months, Salamanca, Spain, may not be Europe’s fashion capital but it puts to shame many of the cities in the US that are on top of the growing fashion scene. Being around people whose sense of fashion was reminiscent of everyone from Madonna in her rocker eighties phase to the glamorous Kate Moss

pre-cocaine scandal only helped fuel the flame in me that wanted to break into the world of fashion in all its glory...

Upon return to the states, I was determined to find myself a “way in”. Thanks to the ever-amazing Internet, I stumbled one day across an online flier advertising the launch party for a new fashion magazine, the name of which I’d never even heard. I figured, “What have I to lose by trying to contact the editor”? Things only picked up from there. I was in within days for an interview for the intern position they were looking to fill, and days later was starting as the newest intern for FAME Digest, a name I would not only come to know, but one with which I would be excited to be affiliated. I was guaranteed a spot with the magazine for three months so I expressed my interest in adding writing to my list of responsibilities as an intern with FAME. I was ecstatic to learn that my writing skills were impressive enough to be published, and that my articles would be read by FAME readers all over the metro. Over the course of the next three months, there would be a number of events to plan and attend, numerous interviews to conduct, and fabulous articles to be sent to print.

In retrospect, as it’s been a month since my internship concluded, I’ve gained the great experience of seeing what it takes to run both a magazine as well as a business. Not everyone gets to see a fashion show from behind the scenes, or see a monthly layout before it hits the racks. I’ve been consulted for artistic advice in event poster production, and put my marketing skills to use in promoting events. I believe the experience with FAME helped get my foot in the door in an industry that has always intrigued me, and is probably partially to thank for getting me into the position I’m in today. I’m interning, yes another intern position, in the Public Relations department at Mall of America as a Fashion Stylist, something which is so up my alley it doesn’t even feel like work! I enjoy putting my sense of style together with the trends of the season in dressing models for local media segments and have been able to put my knowledge of the rules of fashion to work in the real world. I thank FAME for the valuable experience I gained while interning with them and look forward to continuing writing for the magazine as an

Editorial Contributor.

Look for more fun articles to come...I’m loving writing about local fashion!
